FEATURED REVIEW
For brave scouts about to embark on the mission of earning their badge in fatherhood, there is a new handbook whose title is derived from the Boy Scout motto, Be Prepared. Written by Greenberg, this field guide is written with a perfect blend of dry humor and practical wisdom. Following the Boy Scout motif, Greenberg offers innovative skills that cannot be found in traditional parenting books, such as removing foreign objects from your VCR and designing cheap bath toys. Some MacGyver-esque techniques include turning a bottle into a spillproof sippy cup and fashioning an emergency diaper out of a sock, kitchen towel and a roll of duct tape. Greenberg effectively and thoroughly covers the basics involved in caring for and feeding babies such as debating the merits of breast milk over formula and babyproofing the house. But he eschews the high-pressure psychobabble for a more relaxed and forgiving approach to fatherhood. Hayden's hilarious illustrations depict Greenberg's strategies while imitating the kitschy sketches found in the traditional Boy Scout Handbook, circa 1959. Greenberg and Hayden's concept deserves an encore performance in the form of a sequel for toddler care.
